Fitzpatrick, who had held a three-shot lead going into the final round, extended his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes at Harbour Town Golf Links. Despite a strong finish from Scheffler, who birdied the last two holes to force a play-off, Fitzpatrick held his nerve to claim the win.
The Englishman's victory lifts him to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him only the fourth Englishman to win multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick's win came after a dramatic play-off, where he birdied the par-four 18th hole to claim the title. 'I got off to a great start and knew Scottie would make a few birdies, so I had to hang in there,' Fitzpatrick said.
Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his second-place finish at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick in the two-man team event.
