Wilshere Claims First Managerial Trophy as Luton Wins Vertu Trophy

Luton manager Jack Wilshere has secured his first piece of silverware after his team defeated Stockport 3-1 in the Vertu Trophy final. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Wilshere's managerial career, particularly in his debut season. The former Arsenal and England midfielder, who has won two FA Cups as a player, now adds this trophy to his collection thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and a double from Nahki Wells. Wilshere's primary objective is to restore Luton's former glory after the club experienced successive relegations, dropping from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One. This Wembley victory provides another memorable moment for Luton, comparable to their 1988 League Cup win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final triumph over Coventry. For Stockport, this defeat at Wembley adds to their disappointing record, having won only once in seven appearances and failing to beat Luton in 18 matches since 1968. Stockport has also lost all three EFL Trophy finals, including the previous ones in 1992 and 1993. The match saw several pivotal moments, including a denied penalty for Luton in the second minute when Isaiah Jones was shoved to the ground by Josh Stokes. Stockport took the lead in the 11th minute with Adama Sidibeh's goal, but Luton equalized in the 22nd minute through Lawrence's fierce shot. Nahki Wells then put Luton ahead in the 39th minute with a sublime touch and finish. The veteran striker secured his ninth goal of the season and Luton's third in the game during added time, sealing the victory. Wilshere expressed his pride in winning as a manager, stating it surpasses his experiences as a player. He praised his senior players, including Wells, for their crucial roles in the success. Meanwhile, Stockport manager Dave Challinor aims to use the Wembley defeat as motivation to solidify their League One play-off position, with the ultimate goal of promotion remaining the priority.
