Emma Raducanu has decided to withdraw from the Madrid Open, citing her ongoing recovery from an illness she contracted in Romania. This decision comes after she also pulled out of recent WTA Tour events in Miami and Linz. Raducanu's priority remains her rehabilitation, and she is currently back in training with the goal of competing in Rome in early May.
Her last match was at Indian Wells on March 8, where she lost to Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu acknowledged that she needs to work on her aggression and strategy to regain her form.
Since parting ways with coach Francisco Roig in January, she has been informally working with Mark Petchey. Raducanu's next opportunity to compete on clay will be at the Italian Open in Rome, starting on May 5, followed by tournaments in Strasbourg and Rabat leading up to the French Open.
Several high-profile players, including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Barbora Krejcikova, have also withdrawn from the Madrid Open.
