Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed he will hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations championships and representing his country at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, the 35-year-old has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term.
"The decision to retire has been looming, and the time now feels right to step away from the sport at the end of this season," Launchbury stated on the Harlequins' website. "I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to wear the England jersey 70 times, to have been a part of Wasps for so many years, to have represented Harlequins, and to have experienced a season in Japan. "To my fellow teammates, both past and present, I extend my gratitude. The bonds we've formed extend far beyond our time on the pitch.
Every day, I felt privileged to be surrounded by such exceptional individuals. "Rugby has given me a life filled with purpose, friendships, and unforgettable memories – far more than I could have ever imagined.
