England Rugby Star Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name, spanning from 2012 to 2022, Launchbury's impressive career has included three Six Nations championships and appearances at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Quins in 2023, following a stint with Japanese club Toyota Verblitz, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although he has been limited to just six outings this term. Speaking to Harlequins' website, Launchbury reflected, "The decision to retire has been a long time coming, and while it's no secret, I feel the time is right to step away from the sport at the end of this season." He expressed his gratitude, saying, "I've been incredibly fortunate to have represented England 70 times, spent many years at Wasps, and had the privilege of playing for Harlequins, as well as experiencing a season in Japan." Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, stating, "The friendships we've formed go far beyond the rugby pitch. I've never had a day where I didn't enjoy the company of my teammates, and they've made every challenge worthwhile." He added, "Rugby has given me so much more than I ever could have imagined - not just a career, but a life filled with purpose, friendships, and memories that will stay with me forever." Launchbury also touched on his plans for the future, saying, "I've given my all to my career, and my body is telling me it's time for a break. I'd love to stay involved in the sport in some capacity, but for now, I'm looking forward to what's next and being able to watch my children grow up."
