Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Departs, McNamara to Take Over in 2027

John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, with Steve McNamara set to assume the role from the 2027 Betfred Super League season. This development follows a joint agreement between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves, confirming McNamara's appointment. Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains employed by Hull FC. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will oversee the team for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign. A highly accomplished coach, McNamara will return to his boyhood club, where he began his career and made over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. His coaching career spans two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international team, as well as assistant coaching roles in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC's chief executive, Richie Myler, expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, describing him as a coach of the highest caliber who understands the club and the city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed the appointment, citing McNamara's experience, leadership, and standards as crucial in building a competitive team.
