Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps under his belt between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations championships and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.
Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He reflected on his time playing for England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as his experience in Japan, stating, "I've been so fortunate to represent the teams I have." Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships they have formed, which he believes will endure beyond his rugby career. He acknowledged that rugby has given him a sense of purpose and a wealth of memories, but feels that his body is telling him it's time for a break.
While he hopes to remain involved in the sport, Launchbury is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
