Jon Rahm concluded a tumultuous week in LIV Golf by achieving a seven-under 64 on Sunday, securing a six-shot victory at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, marking his second win this year on the Saudi-backed circuit. The week was marked by uncertainty surrounding the Saudi-funded league, with CEO Scott O'Neil issuing a memo to staff stating that LIV was guaranteed funding through the end of the year, aiming to alleviate growing concerns about the league's financial stability.
This move came in response to reports suggesting that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) would be terminating its financial support for the circuit. A power outage occurred on Tuesday at the event in Mexico, further fueling speculation, and the live stream was interrupted for two hours during the opening round. However, LIV announced its return to Chapultepec Golf Club for next year's event. Rahm had previously experienced a winless season on LIV, although he did claim the points title, and had also faced disappointment in 2017 at Chapultepec during a World Golf Championship.
Following a birdie on the reachable par-4 second hole and an eagle on the subsequent hole, Rahm's victory was all but certain, as he played bogey-free throughout the game. Rahm expressed his surprise at the win, stating, 'If you had told me last Thursday that I would be winning by a six-shot margin, I wouldn't have believed you, given how poorly I played.' Rahm had previously tied for 38th in the Masters.
Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing concerns about exacerbating the issue. DeChambeau, who aimed to become the first player to achieve three consecutive wins on LIV Golf, was 16 shots behind Rahm when he withdrew. DeChambeau stated, 'I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury. This wasn't how I envisioned the week unfolding.' DeChambeau plans to undergo evaluation and hopes to participate in the LIV Golf Virginia event on May 7-10, just a week before the PGA Championship.
Rahm's Legion XIII team also secured their first win of the year. David Puig achieved a score of 66 to finish in second place, earning valuable world ranking points and nearly securing his spot in the PGA Championship.
With another strong finish in Virginia, Puig may also qualify for the US Open. The next LIV Golf League event is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC, with the LIV Golf Virginia event.
