Injury Forces Alcaraz and Djokovic to Withdraw from Madrid Open

Top-ranked tennis players Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have been forced to pull out of the Mutua Madrid Open due to injuries. Alcaraz, currently ranked second in the world, is still recovering from a wrist injury, while Djokovic is dealing with a persistent shoulder issue. The Spanish player was receiving medical treatment during his first-round win over Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona tournament and subsequently withdrew before his next match against Tomas Machac. Djokovic, on the other hand, has been working through his injury problems that led him to miss recent events in Miami and Monte Carlo. The 38-year-old Serb took to social media to announce his withdrawal from the Madrid Open, stating that he is continuing his recovery to be back on the court soon. Alcaraz expressed his disappointment on social media, saying that not being able to play in front of his home crowd hurts, especially since Madrid is one of the most special places on his calendar. With Alcaraz out of the Madrid Open, Jannik Sinner is likely to become the top seed at the French Open and potentially hold the world No 1 spot until the end of Wimbledon. Other players, including Taylor Fritz, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and Britain's Jacob Fearnley, have also withdrawn from the tournament. Meanwhile, Rafael Jodar has been making waves in the Barcelona Open, earning his second consecutive win against Cameron Norrie and extending his winning streak to eight matches. The 19-year-old Spaniard will face ninth seed Arthur Fils in the semi-finals on Saturday.
