McIlroy savors 'incredible' Masters win after dramatic finale

Rory McIlroy has expressed relief and delight after securing his second consecutive Masters title, overcoming a challenging final round to claim a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy, who had built a record-breaking six-shot lead halfway through the tournament, struggled initially on the final day, falling two shots behind playing partner Cameron Young after dropping three shots in a two-hole stretch. However, the world No 2 responded strongly, finding four birdies over the remainder of his round to secure a sixth major title. McIlroy joins an elite group of players, including Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods, as the only golfers to have won The Masters in successive years. Reflecting on his victory, McIlroy acknowledged that winning The Masters is 'just really difficult' and that he had to 'hang in there' to claim the title. He also admitted that having a six-shot lead going into the weekend would have made it a 'bitter pill to swallow' if he hadn't managed to get himself over the finish line. McIlroy's win marks the third leg of the Grand Slam, having completed the feat in 2014, and he now looks forward to the next men's major, the PGA Championship, scheduled to take place from May 14-17.
