This puts him one shot ahead of Ryder Cup teammate Viktor Hovland and American Harris English. Following a tumultuous Masters, Robert MacIntyre made a strong start with a five-under round, placing him among a group three shots behind Åberg.
Åberg attributed his success to his iron play and approach shots, stating, 'I felt like the highlight for me was definitely my irons and my approach play. I felt like that was really positive.' MacIntyre, who faced controversy at the Masters, reflected on his performance, saying, 'Coming off last week, a disappointing performance, I was comfortable with the golf course, comfortable with my game, my game's been in good shape. Trying to put as much of last week behind me as I could.' World No 1 Scottie Scheffler recovered from a challenging start to shoot three under, while Ireland's Shane Lowry finished one under.
England's Tommy Fleetwood and American Justin Thomas struggled, finishing five over and 76 respectively.
