England's Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement from Rugby

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be retiring from professional rugby at the end of the season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has had a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins in 2023, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his current season has been limited to just six games. In a statement on the Harlequins website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He reflected on his time playing for England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as his experience in Japan, stating, "I've been so fortunate to represent the teams I have." Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships they have built, which he believes will extend far beyond his rugby career. He acknowledged that rugby has given him a life filled with purpose, friendships, and lasting memories. Launchbury has decided to retire due to the physical demands of the sport, stating, "My body is telling me it needs a break." While he hopes to remain involved in the sport, his immediate priority is to spend more time with his family and watch his children grow up.
