Salford Welcomes Back Former Captain Brierley as Chief Executive

Ryan Brierley has made a return to Salford, taking on the role of chief executive for the newly reformed club. Brierley, a former captain of Salford, was previously sold to Oldham as part of Salford Red Devils' efforts to raise funds during their challenging 2025 campaign. Now, at 33, the lifelong Salford supporter has decided to end his playing career at Oldham to focus on leading the club's rebuilding process and restoring professional rugby league in the city. This development comes after the consortium, known as Phoenix Bid, successfully secured the Rugby Football League (RFL) license. "For me, Salford will always hold a special place in my heart, and I believe preserving its rugby league heritage is a cause that goes beyond rivalries," Brierley expressed. "I hope the incredible fans of Oldham understand that this decision is about protecting something we all deeply care about, and I appreciate the great club they are a part of. "I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone at Oldham, including the management, staff, players, and especially the fans. I know this news may come as a surprise, and I am deeply sorry to be leaving so soon, but I felt compelled to take on this new challenge." The Phoenix Bid consortium has confirmed that preparations for the 2026 season are underway, with Brierley tasked with delivering a community-focused future for Salford rugby league. "The hard work begins now," Brierley stated. "This is for the fans, and we won't let them down. It's an honor to lead this consortium and help guide Salford into a new era. "I ask for everyone's patience and support as we rebuild together, one step at a time, united for the club and our city. "I look forward to working closely with Mason Caton-Brown, who has led the bid in recent weeks, and the superb team that has shown overwhelming passion for Salford Rugby." Salford is set to begin their 2026 Championship season on January 16 against Brierley's former club, Oldham, who have thanked him for his efforts and wished him well. "We can confirm that Ryan Brierley has left Oldham to pursue an opportunity at another club," a statement from Oldham read. "The player informed us of his desire to be released from his contract, to which we have agreed. "Everyone at Oldham wishes Ryan every success in his new venture and thanks him for his contributions while wearing an Oldham shirt."
