Kent struggles against Northants as Crawley's form woes continue

Northamptonshire amassed a record 684 for two declared, with Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter, and Calvin Harrison all scoring centuries on the opening day. Nathan McSweeney followed suit on Saturday, as Northants' top four recorded centuries for the first time. Procter remained unbeaten on 261, posting a maiden double ton. Kent, in response, lost Ben Compton and Sam Northeast cheaply, with all eyes on Zak Crawley, whose Test spot is under scrutiny. Crawley, having made nine and 20 at Durham last week, showed patience to reach 26 but ultimately fell to Harry Conway. Kent closed on 119 for six, with Crawley's England opening partner, Ben Duckett, run out for one in Nottinghamshire's match against Glamorgan. Elsewhere, Ben McKinney boosted his prospects of displacing Crawley or Duckett with a 244 for Durham against Gloucestershire. Craig Overton's career-best 141 helped Somerset reach 348 in response to Essex's 149, while Rishi Patel's unbeaten 133 and Jake Weatherald's 96 aided Leicestershire's fightback against Surrey. Hampshire, meanwhile, took control against Yorkshire, skittling them for 177 before reaching 93 for two and a lead of 167.
