Fitzpatrick Edges Out Scheffler in Thrilling PGA Tour Play-off

Matt Fitzpatrick has claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late scare to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had taken a three-shot lead into the final day at Harbour Town Golf Links and initially extended his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler closed with back-to-back birdies, and when Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole, the two players were tied at 18 under, forcing a play-off. Fitzpatrick regained his composure and fired his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole, rolling in the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage win in four years. The victory lifts Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him the fourth Englishman to register multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick had started strongly, with a 10-foot birdie at the first, but Scheffler stayed in touch, tidying up from close range at the second. A 15-foot birdie from Fitzpatrick at the third restored a four-shot buffer, but Scheffler refused to give up, eventually closing the gap with a six-foot birdie at the ninth. The pair traded pars until Scheffler signed off a bogey-free front nine, with both players missing the green in regulation at the 10th before securing close-range pars. As the round progressed, Si Woo Kim temporarily cut the lead to two with a birdie at the 15th, but Scheffler produced a brilliant up and down from the sand to join Kim in tied-second. Scheffler then rattled in a 10-foot birdie at the 16th to reclaim solo second and move within a shot of Fitzpatrick. Despite a clunky chip from the back of the final green leading to a two-putt bogey, Fitzpatrick composed himself to find the green in regulation on the first play-off hole, where Scheffler finished short and left himself a difficult par putt. Fitzpatrick coaxed in his birdie to claim the win, his second PGA Tour title in three starts. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his close second place at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in the two-man team event.
