Shelton Dominates in BMW Open Final with Straight Set Victory

Ben Shelton secured his fifth Tour title with a convincing 6-2, 7-5 win over Flavio Cobolli, as he expressed his growing fondness for clay surfaces. Shelton's victory marked a significant milestone, as he became the first American to win three ATP 500 titles and his second clay title, following his loss to Alexander Zverev in the final last year. With Roland Garros approaching, Shelton shared his ambitions for the clay courts, having been knocked out in the round of 16 last year by Carlos Alcaraz. "I started at a high level, which I've done before against him," Shelton stated. "The challenge is maintaining that level as he raises his game. I managed to do that in the second set, persevering when he played exceptional tennis, and ultimately winning in straight sets." Shelton expressed his satisfaction with his performance, noting that he improved throughout the week and appreciated the efforts of his team. As he looks ahead, Shelton has high aspirations for the clay courts, a surface he aims to master each year. Cobolli, who had played an outstanding match against Zverev the previous day, was unable to replicate that finesse in the final. Shelton's win also made him the first American since Andre Agassi in 2002 to win a title on clay above the ATP 250 level, having won his first clay title in Houston in 2024. In a separate match, Arthur Fils overcame Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6 (2) to win his first title since 2024 at the Barcelona Open. Fils, who returned to action in February after nearly eight months out due to injury, claimed his fourth ATP title with the victory. He dominated the first set in just 31 minutes, but struggled to capitalize on seven break points as Rublev stayed alive in the match. Fils eventually secured the crucial break to lead 4-2, but squandered a chance to win when he made three consecutive errors, allowing Rublev to break back. The match intensified as Rublev rescued three match points to hold, then broke for a 6-5 lead, only for Fils to draw level and force a decisive tiebreak, which he won 7-2.
