Draper's Barcelona Campaign Cut Short Due to Injury as Norrie Advances

Jack Draper's clay-court season got off to a disappointing start as he was forced to retire due to an injury in the decisive third set of his first-round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Barcelona Open. Draper had begun promisingly, taking the first set 6-3, but struggled with his movement thereafter, requiring medical attention and taping below his right knee between sets. Despite his valiant effort, Draper trailed 4-1 in the third set before withdrawing from the match. His opponent, Etcheverry, praised Draper, saying, 'He was playing unbelievably... He's a great competitor, a great fighter, and hopefully, he can recover soon to get back on tour.' Draper, ranked higher than Etcheverry in the ATP rankings, had started strong but was hindered by his knee from the start of the second set, allowing Etcheverry to take control. This was Draper's fourth tournament back on the ATP Tour since an injury kept him sidelined since last August's US Open. He is scheduled to play next at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid from April 22. Meanwhile, British No 1 Cameron Norrie secured a spot in the second round with a grueling three-set win over three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4. Norrie, who was not feeling well physically, had to dig deep mentally to emerge victorious. He will now face American Ethan Quinn in the next round.
