LIV Golf CEO Downplays Concerns Over Funding
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil has alleviated concerns regarding the series' funding, stating that it is secure for the current season and that the organization will work diligently to ensure its continuation. This comes amid speculation that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which backs the breakaway golf league, may withdraw its financial support. The PIF has invested a reported $5 billion in LIV Golf since its inception in 2021. O'Neil's reassurances follow comments from LIV team captain Sergio Garcia, who mentioned that funding is in place until 2030. However, O'Neil emphasized that the series operates like any other private equity-funded business, with a focus on creating a sustainable business plan. Earlier, O'Neil informed LIV staff that the current season would proceed as planned, despite reports of an 'emergency meeting' in New York and speculation about the PIF's potential withdrawal of funding. The PIF has not commented on the matter, but its governor, Yasir Al Rumayyan, recently stated that some investments are being reviewed due to economic feasibility and the Middle East conflict. LIV Golf players, including Jon Rahm, have expressed confidence in the series' future, with Rahm stating that he is 'not too worried' about the rumors surrounding LIV's funding.
