Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host ATP 250 Grass-Court Event Starting 2028

A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is set to be held in Milan, Italy, beginning in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels. Milan's San Siro, with its massive capacity of over 75,000, is a likely candidate to host the event, given its location in northern Italy and the region's suitable climate. The tournament is expected to take place every June, starting in 2028. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation president, Angelo Binaghi, mentioned that the decision on the venue is still pending but expressed interest in hosting the event at San Siro, drawing inspiration from the Madrid Open's introduction of practice courts at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030, the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, and the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. Additionally, plans are underway to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale, with construction scheduled to commence after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia and be completed in time for the 2028 edition. Binaghi has also expressed his ambition to make the Rome tournament a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and joining the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open as one of the sport's most prestigious events.
