Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Dashed by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' bid to reach their first-ever Investec Champions Cup semi-final was thwarted as they suffered a narrow 22-19 defeat at the hands of RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite being favourites due to their strong home record and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side were edged out in a thrilling encounter that saw the three-time European champions score four tries to Glasgow's three. The defeat sets up a semi-final clash between Toulon and either Leinster or Sale. Glasgow were forced to make a late change before kick-off, with Macenzzie Duncan replacing the injured Max Williamson on the bench. The home side took the lead after a cautious start, with Toulon racking up penalties in their own 22, and eventually, Alex Samuel and Ben Afshar combined to send Stafford McDowall over for the first try. However, Toulon struck back quickly, with Jeremy Sinzelle and Gael Drean combining to level the scores. A trademark run by Kyle Steyn carried Glasgow back into Toulon territory, but Sione Tuipulotu was held up just short of the line. Toulon's ill-discipline was punished when Junior Kpoku was shown a yellow card, and Glasgow took advantage of the extra man as McDowall picked out Ollie Smith with a brilliant pass to score. The hosts found themselves on the back foot, and Jean-Baptiste Gros crept over the line to level the scores at 12-12. Toulon then took the lead for the first time, with Melvyn Jaminet passing wide to Drean, who used his pace to score his second try. Glasgow started the second half on top and regained the lead, with Gregor Hiddleston breaking off to stretch for the line. However, Toulon enjoyed a period of pressure close to the Glasgow line, and eventually, Nacho Brex picked a gap and burst through to power all the way to the line. Warriors enjoyed one last flurry, but their opponents forced the turnover to seal the win. In another quarter-final match, Leinster Rugby ran in six tries as they trounced Sale Sharks 43-13 to book their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals, where they will face Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start, with Dan Sheehan crashing over to score a 10th-minute try, and Harry Byrne added the conversion. Sale reduced the deficit with a penalty from George Ford, but they were down to 14 men when Dan du Preez was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Full-back Hugo Keenan stretched Leinster's lead with a second try, and despite a second Ford penalty, Leinster's flanker Ryan Baird crossed for a third try, followed by wingers Rieko Ioane and Tommy O'Brien. Sale replacement Alex Willis touched down in the corner, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try wrapped up a convincing win for Leinster.
