Hull FC Announces Coaching Change as Cartwright Departs, Paving Way for McNamara's 2027 Arrival

John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach, effective immediately, as the club prepares for Steve McNamara's arrival in 2027. This development comes after Hull FC and Warrington Wolves reached a mutual agreement for McNamara to join Hull FC as their new head coach for the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains an employee of Hull FC. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the role of head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as an assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the rest of the 2026 campaign. McNamara, who rose through Hull FC's youth ranks and went on to have a distinguished playing career with over 160 senior appearances, is set to return to his boyhood club. His coaching career spans over two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and as the England international side's coach, as well as time in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, marked by a Challenge Cup final win, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC's chief executive, Richie Myler, expressed delight at securing McNamara's services, citing his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara's appointment, highlighting his experience, leadership, and high standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches on Sky Sports+.
