Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name, spanning from 2012 to 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, the 35-year-old has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. "The decision to retire has been on the horizon, and I feel the time is right to step away from the sport at the end of this season," Launchbury stated on the Harlequins' website.
"I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to wear the England jersey 70 times, to have been a part of Wasps for so many years, and to have represented Harlequins and Toyota Verblitz. "I want to extend my gratitude to my teammates, both past and present, for the friendships we've formed that extend far beyond our time on the pitch.
"Rugby has provided me with a life filled with purpose, friendships, and memories that I will cherish forever. "After dedicating my all to my career, my body is now telling me it's time for a break.
"While I would love to remain involved in the sport in some capacity, I'm looking forward to the next chapter and being able to spend more time watching my children grow up.
