Hull FC Announces Coaching Change as Cartwright Departs and McNamara Prepares to Take the Helm

John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to assume the role in 2027. McNamara, who will join his boyhood club, has agreed to a deal that will see him lead Hull FC into the 2027 Betfred Super League season. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will take over as head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, a highly respected figure in the sport, boasts an impressive coaching career spanning over two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side. His achievements include guiding the Dragons to a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. According to Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler, McNamara's appointment is a significant moment for the club, bringing a coach of the highest caliber who understands the team and the city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill expressed similar sentiments, highlighting McNamara's experience, leadership, and standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Cartwright will remain a Hull FC employee, while McNamara will continue as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
