Wilshere Secures Maiden Managerial Honour as Luton Claims Vertu Trophy

Luton manager Jack Wilshere earned his first managerial trophy after his team defeated Stockport 3-1 in the Vertu Trophy final. Wilshere, a two-time FA Cup winner as a player, achieved this milestone in his debut season as a manager, thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and a double from Nahki Wells. Following successive relegations that sent Luton from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One, Wilshere's goal is to restore the club's former glory. This win marked Luton's 10th Wembley appearance and provided another memorable moment, comparable to their 1988 League Cup final win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final victory against Coventry. Stockport, on the other hand, experienced another disappointing day at Wembley, having won only once in seven appearances and not beating Luton in 18 matches since 1968. They have also lost all three EFL Trophy finals, including the previous two in 1992 and 1993. The match saw several key moments, including a denied penalty for Luton in the second minute when Isaiah Jones was shoved in the back by Josh Stokes. Stockport took an 11th-minute lead through Adama Sidibeh but Luton equalized in the 22nd minute with a goal from Lawrence. Wells then put Luton ahead in the 39th minute. The second half was less eventful, but Wells sealed the win with his second goal in the first of 10 added minutes. An emotional Wilshere expressed that winning as a manager surpasses his experiences as a player, highlighting the greater sense of responsibility. He praised his senior players, including Wells, who played despite being an injury doubt. Stockport manager Dave Challinor hopes to use the defeat as motivation to secure their League One play-off place and return to Wembley in eight weeks.
