Rory McIlroy has cemented his place in golf history with a dramatic title defense at The Masters, overcoming a series of challenges to secure his second consecutive victory at Augusta National. McIlroy's win marked the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history, but he faced intense pressure on the final day, recovering from a two-stroke deficit to emerge victorious. The world's second-ranked golfer trailed playing partners Cameron Young and Justin Rose at various points during the final round but managed to regain his composure, posting back-to-back birdies from the seventh hole to get back on track. As McIlroy approached Amen Corner, he added further birdies to move three strokes ahead with five holes remaining, ultimately closing out an impressive victory despite bogeying his 72nd hole for the second year in a row.
This win brings McIlroy's major title count to six, matching Sir Nick Faldo's record, and makes him the fourth golfer to achieve consecutive Masters victories, joining an elite group that includes Jack Nicklaus, Faldo, and Tiger Woods. "It's surreal to think I had to wait 17 years for my first Green Jacket, and now I've won two in a row," McIlroy reflected.
"My perseverance at this tournament has finally paid off. It was a tough weekend, but I did the bulk of my work on Thursday and Friday. I'm just thrilled to have hung in there and gotten the job done." McIlroy's final round consisted of 71 strokes, including five birdies, a bogey, and a double-bogey, as numerous players remained in contention throughout the thrilling major Sunday.

Final scores: -12 McIlroy, -11 Scheffler, -10 Young, Henley, Rose, Hatton When asked about how his win compared to last year, McIlroy said: "It felt pretty similar. I made a double early on the first hole last year, and I made a double on four this year.
I played flawless golf after that. "I made four birdies and no bogeys going to the last tee, knowing I had a two-shot lead.
It's nice to have that two-shot cushion instead of the one like I had last year. "I looked at the board after I made the bogey on six and I think I went back to nine under at that point. I said, 'okay, if I can get to 14 under, I think I've got a really good chance of winning this tournament.' I didn't quite get there, but 13 under was good enough standing on the 18th tee." The next men's major is the PGA Championship, scheduled to take place from May 14-17 at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
