Ipswich Claim Historic Win at Norwich to Reclaim Second Spot
Ipswich significantly boosted their chances of automatic promotion from the Championship with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road. The win propelled Ipswich into the top two, with two games in hand over third-placed Millwall, as first-half goals from Jaden Philogene and George Hirst sealed a long-awaited double over their East Anglian rivals. Norwich dominated possession but was thwarted by an impressive defensive display from the visitors, who limited clear-cut chances to a minimum. The defeat ended Norwich's faint playoff hopes, although a top-10 finish remains a remarkable achievement for a side that was in the bottom three at the start of the year. Ipswich took the lead in controversial fashion after 11 minutes when Anis Ben Slimane accidentally caught Jack Taylor, and referee Anthony Backhouse awarded a penalty that Philogene converted. Norfolk's 'keeper, Vladan Kovacevic, then made a good save to palm away Hirst's header, but the hosts gradually worked their way into the game. Despite having plenty of the ball, clear-cut chances were scarce, with Pelle Mattsson's powerful shot, saved by Christian Walton, being a rare moment of danger for the visitors. Kovacevic made another good stop to deny Hirst just before the break, but moments later, Town doubled their lead. Darnell Furlong's long throw from the left was flicked on, and an unmarked Hirst volleyed home to give his side a two-goal advantage. Norwich made two attacking substitutions at halftime and quickly tested Walton, but Ipswich should have made it three following a swift counter-attack, only to be denied by another excellent Kovacevic save. Norwich's manager, Philippe Clement, expressed frustration over the penalty decision, stating it was not a penalty and supporting the use of VAR to get such decisions right. Ipswich's Kieran McKenna hailed the result as brilliant for the club, acknowledging the importance of the fixture and the double victory over their rivals. He praised his team's game plan, resilience, and togetherness in achieving a special win for the fans.
