Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as First Female Head Coach in Top European Leagues

In a groundbreaking move, Marie-Louise Eta has been appointed as the head coach of Union Berlin, becoming the first female to hold this position in the top five European men's leagues. Eta will initially take on an interim role, aiming to secure the team's position in the Bundesliga before transitioning to the women's team next season. This appointment marks a significant milestone, as Eta previously made history in 2023 as the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and the top divisions of Europe's major leagues. Union sporting director Horst Heldt expressed his delight at Eta's agreement, stating, "I'm delighted that Marie Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before she becomes head coach of the women's first team as planned in the summer." Eta replaces Steffen Baumgart, who was let go following the team's 3-1 loss to Heidenheim. With five games remaining, Eta is determined to secure the crucial points needed to ensure the team's survival in the Bundesliga. England manager Sarina Wiegman praised the appointment, calling Eta a "trailblazer" and emphasizing the significance of this move for women in football. Eta's journey is not an isolated incident, as other female coaches, such as Sabrina Wittmann, have also broken down barriers in the sport. Wittmann, who became the first woman to coach a men's team in Germany's top three divisions in 2024, reflected on her experience, stating, "I knew I opened the door a little for women... I was honestly afraid of closing the door." Wittmann's success has paved the way for others, including Eta, to follow in her footsteps and challenge traditional norms in the football world.
