The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) chief refereeing officer, Howard Webb, has shed light on the penalty decisions that went against Manchester United during their match against Bournemouth. Webb attributed the disparity in the penalty calls to the varying speeds at which the attackers were moving. In the match, Manchester United took the lead twice through goals from Bruno Fernandes and an own goal by James Hill, but Bournemouth equalized through Ryan Christie and a late penalty from Eli Junior Kroupi. Fernandes' penalty was awarded after a foul on Matheus Cunha, but a similar incident involving Amad Diallo was not given as a penalty. The decision was upheld by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Webb noted that the speed at which Evanilson was moving when he was fouled by Harry Maguire was significantly different from Diallo's speed, making the Maguire foul a clearer penalty. The on-field decision was respected by the VAR, and Webb emphasized that the referee's call is crucial in the application of VAR. Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick expressed frustration at the inconsistency in the penalty decisions, describing it as "crazy" and "baffling."
