McIlroy Makes Strong Start in Bid to Defend Masters Title

Rory McIlroy has begun his defense of The Masters title with a promising start, taking the clubhouse lead after a stunning opening round at Augusta National. Following his historic career Grand Slam victory last year, McIlroy is aiming to become the fourth player to win consecutive Masters titles. He carded an impressive five-under 67, featuring six birdies and a single bogey, to share the early lead with Sam Burns. McIlroy remains cautious, saying, 'It's a great start, but there's a long way to go. I'm right in the tournament, and it's a lot better than starting from seven behind like I was last year.' He expressed satisfaction with his performance, feeling he 'swung freely' and managed to 'string some good swings together' from the eighth hole onwards. The 36-year-old's round was marked by a brilliant par-save and successive birdies, taking him to four under with four holes to play. McIlroy avoided a late stumble, draining a 30-foot birdie to pull level with Burns. He missed a chance for the solo lead at the 17th but recovered to make par, equaling the second-lowest opening round by a defending champion at The Masters. McIlroy admitted to feeling the same nerves as always, saying, 'I felt like I settled into the round really nicely and really quickly.' He added, 'I think I got a lot out of my round today. It started pretty scrappy, but I started to string some good swings together from the eighth hole onwards.' McIlroy's patience was rewarded with five birdies in an eight-hole stretch, pushing him up the leaderboard. Golf expert Butch Harmon praised McIlroy's 'escape artist' performance, saying, 'It's been a pretty impressive round to be five-under and tied for the lead.' Andrew Coltart commented, 'Historically, playing as he's played today would have been a 73 or 74, but he's turned it into 67. That was wonderful golfing from McIlroy.' Jack Nicklaus, who first defended his title at The Masters in 1966, backed McIlroy to follow suit, saying, 'Rory has got the monkey off his back, and I think he has a very, very good chance to repeat.' With a star-studded leaderboard, Jason Day noted, 'There are plenty of great golfers out there that you have to worry about, not just McIlroy.'
