Cyclist Faces Suspension for On-Road Altercation

The governing body of world cycling has handed down a 25-day ban to New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident where he physically assaulted a fellow competitor during a race. The altercation, which was captured on video, occurred on March 7 at the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands, where Watts punched Dutch rider Marijn Maas. The Union Cycliste Internationale confirmed that Watts has accepted the penalty, which will be in effect until May 2. Watts had previously issued an apology via social media, attributing his actions to a momentary lapse in judgment. His team, NSN Development Team, also apologized for the incident. As part of the disciplinary action, a one-day suspension imposed by his team on March 8 will be deducted from the overall suspension period. The UCI stated, "Kiaan Watts will serve a 25-day suspension, with credit given for the one-day team-imposed suspension on March 8."
