Injury Forces Draper's Early Exit in Barcelona as Norrie Advances

Jack Draper's clay-court season got off to a disappointing start as he was forced to retire due to injury in the decisive third set of his first-round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Barcelona Open. Despite winning the first set, Draper struggled with his movement and had his right knee taped by a physio before withdrawing from the match. Draper, who is ranked higher than Etcheverry, had a promising start but was hindered by his knee from the second set onwards. Etcheverry, who recently took world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz to three sets, praised Draper as a great competitor and fighter. This was Draper's fourth tournament back on the ATP Tour since his left-arm injury kept him sidelined since last August's US Open. He is next scheduled to play at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid. Meanwhile, British No 1 Cameron Norrie overcame a gruelling three-set match against three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka to advance to the second round. Norrie won the opening set but Wawrinka took the second on a tiebreak, forcing a decider. Norrie emerged victorious, securing a 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 win and will now face American Ethan Quinn in the next round. Norrie stated that he had to dig deep mentally due to not feeling well physically. In other news, Katie Boulter eased into the last 16 of the Rouen Open with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Maria Timofeeva and is targeting a good run in the tournament.
