Stokes Aims for May Return After Narrowly Escaping Serious Injury in Training
England Test captain Ben Stokes is on track to make his return to cricket in May, following a 'lucky' escape from a serious training accident. Stokes suffered a broken cheekbone and other facial injuries when he was hit by a cricket ball while coaching Durham's academy players in February. He underwent surgery and is now set to play for Durham against Worcestershire on May 8 and against Kent on May 15, as well as potentially featuring for England Lions against South Africa A later that month. Stokes reflected on the incident, saying it was 'pretty nasty' but he feels 'pretty thankful' to have escaped more severe consequences. The injury initially set back his plans by about a month, but he has since adjusted his training schedule to ensure he is ready for the start of the Test summer, including leading England in their first Test against New Zealand at Lord's on June 4. Stokes also addressed speculation about his relationship with head coach Brendon McCullum, stating that while they may have differences of opinion, they share a common goal of achieving success and that debate and discussion are essential in a healthy sporting environment. Meanwhile, England fast bowler Brydon Carse has withdrawn from the IPL due to an injury to his bowling hand, with the severity of the injury currently unclear.
