Cyclist Handed 25-Day Ban for On-Road Altercation

Following an incident during a recent race, New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts has been suspended for 25 days by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Watts, 24, was found to have punched fellow competitor Marijn Maas in the head during the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands on March 7. Video footage of the altercation led to an investigation and subsequent sanction. The cyclist has accepted the punishment, which includes a suspension period until May 2, with a one-day team-imposed suspension on March 8 being counted towards the total. Watts took to social media to apologize for his actions, citing a momentary lapse in judgment. His team, NSN Development Team, also issued a formal apology for the incident. The UCI stated that Watts will serve the suspension, emphasizing the importance of sporting behavior among competitors.
