England Lock Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement Plans

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be retiring from professional rugby at the end of the season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career that includes three Six Nations titles and appearances at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Having made the move to Quins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, Launchbury has made 50 appearances for the club, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins website, Launchbury reflected on his decision, saying: "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, past and present, and acknowledged the significant impact rugby has had on his life, providing not only a career but also a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and cherished memories. Launchbury, who has given his all to the sport, feels that his body is telling him it's time for a break. While he hopes to remain involved in the game in some capacity, his immediate priority is to spend quality time with his family and watch his children grow up.
