Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Barcelona Open due to a wrist injury that proved more severe than initially anticipated. The Spanish tennis star, who was looking to reclaim the world number one spot, won his first match but experienced discomfort in his right wrist.
Following a medical examination, Alcaraz decided to withdraw from the tournament to avoid further aggravating the injury. He expressed his disappointment, stating that he must prioritize his health and recovery in order to be ready for upcoming tournaments, including the French Open. Meanwhile, British number one Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarterfinals after a tough three-set victory over American Ethan Quinn. On the WTA Tour, Iga Swiatek secured a quarterfinal spot at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart with a win over Laura Siegemund.
Novak Djokovic also announced his return to action at the Mutua Madrid Open, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Tennis.
