Sinner and Alcaraz Advance to Quarterfinals at Monte-Carlo Masters

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner ended his streak of 37 consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level but still managed to defeat Tomas Machac 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Sinner, who recently completed the Sunshine Double without dropping a set, is now one step closer to potentially dethroning current world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals after the Canadian progressed following Casper Ruud's retirement. Meanwhile, Alcaraz dropped a set but secured a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry to continue his title defense. Alcaraz will play Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals, while 19-year-old Joao Fonseca reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matteo Berrettini. Other winners include Alexander Zverev and Alex De Minaur. Valentin Vacherot made history as the first Monegasque in the Open Era to reach the top eight in Monaco with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Hubert Hurkacz. In the Linz WTA 500 tournament, the second and third seeds, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Liudmila Samsonova, were eliminated. In other news, Holger Rune announced his return to action at next month's Hamburg Open after undergoing Achilles surgery in October. The Hamburg Open starts on May 16, featuring Alexander Zverev and other top players.
