Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Dashed by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' bid to reach their first-ever Investec Champions Cup semi-final was thwarted by a 22-19 defeat to RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite being favourites due to their strong home form and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side fell short. The three-time European champions Toulon edged the match with four tries to Glasgow's three, setting up a semi-final clash against Leinster or Sale. Glasgow made a late change before kick-off, replacing Max Williamson with Macenzzie Duncan on the bench. The home side took the lead after a cautious start, with Toulon racking up penalties in their own 22. Alex Samuel secured the lineout, and Ben Afshar's pass sent Stafford McDowall over for the first try. Toulon responded quickly, with Ben White's long pass finding Jeremy Sinzelle, who moved the ball to Gael Drean for the score. A trademark Kyle Steyn run put Glasgow back in Toulon territory, but Sione Tuipulotu was held up just short of the line. Toulon's ill-discipline was warned by referee Karl Dickson, and Junior Kpoku was shown a yellow card at the next infringement. Glasgow capitalized on the extra man, with McDowall picking out Ollie Smith for a brilliant pass, allowing the winger to score. The hosts found themselves on the back foot, and Jean-Baptiste Gros crept over the line for a converted try, knotting the score at 12-12. Toulon took the lead with Melvyn Jaminet passing wide to Drean, who used his pace to score his second try. Glasgow started the second half strong, regaining the lead with Gregor Hiddleston stretching for the line. Toulon enjoyed a period of pressure but finally broke through when Nacho Brex burst through to score. Warriors had one last flurry, but Toulon forced the turnover to seal the win. In another match, Leinster Rugby trounced Sale Sharks 43-13 to book their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals, where they will face Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start with Dan Sheehan crashing over to score, and Harry Byrne added the conversion. Sale reduced the deficit with a penalty from George Ford but were down to 14 men when Dan du Preez was shown a yellow card. Full-back Hugo Keenan stretched Leinster's lead with a second try, and prop Simon McIntyre's yellow card did not aid Sale's cause. Flanker Ryan Baird crossed for a third try, followed by wingers Rieko Ioane and Tommy O'Brien, with Byrne adding the conversions. Sale replacement Alex Willis touched down, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try wrapped up a convincing win for Leinster.
