Southampton Extend Unbeaten Run with 2-1 Victory Over Derby

Southampton continued their ascent up the Championship table with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over fellow play-off hopefuls Derby at St Mary's. Second-half goals from Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis overturned Carlton Morris' earlier strike, extending the Saints' unbeaten run to 17 games. The hosts started strongly, with Scienza creating an early chance for Tom Fellows, whose heavy first touch cost him a shot on goal. Derby were forced into a ninth-minute change when Bobby Clark limped off, replaced by Oscar Fraulo. Despite being without United States striker Patrick Agyemang due to an Achilles injury, Derby showed intent, with Morris leading the line and scoring an unlikely opening goal from a deflected Joe Ward corner. Southampton sought a quick reply, with Harwood-Bellis nodding Ryan Manning's free-kick wide of the post. The Saints dominated the second half, with Scienza laying on a chance for James Bree, who sliced his shot wide. Another chance came and went when Fellows headed Manning's cross over the bar from close range. Derby had a rare test for Daniel Peretz when he saved Sammie Szmodics' 20-yard shot low to his left. Moments later, Saints got the goal they deserved when Scienza finished off a flowing move by curling into the far corner after Jander and Azaz created the opening. St Mary's erupted once more when Saints went ahead as Harwood-Bellis connected perfectly with another Manning free-kick to head beyond O'Donnell. Derby's John Eustace quickly made changes, but the Saints remained resolute, with Harwood-Bellis reacting superbly to block Morris' effort from the edge of the six-yard box. The Saints are now unbeaten since January 17. In a separate match, Sheffield United's Chris Wilder reflected on his team's performance, stating, 'We got off to the worst possible start. Hull are in the position they are for a reason; they're a team that like to counter and suck you in and they've got talented players at the top of the pitch.' Hull's Sergij Jakirovic expressed his disbelief at the referee's decisions, saying, 'It is unbelievable for us because we were the better team today. We had so many chances and the game has been changed completely by the referee.'
