Great Britain Stuns Australia to Secure Spot in Billie Jean King Cup Finals

The British duo of Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart sealed a decisive 3-0 victory for Great Britain against Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier, winning their doubles match in straight sets. Burrage and Dart overcame Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez 6-3, 6-4, securing the win in Melbourne. After initially trailing 3-1 in the first set, the British pair regained their footing, winning five consecutive games following the closure of the roof on John Cain Arena. The pair then traded breaks early in the second set before serving out the match on their first attempt, thus clinching the victory for Anne Keothavong's team. An emotional Burrage expressed her elation, stating, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of the way we played and managed to close out the match.' Dart added, 'It's surreal to have made the finals, considering we played well and were able to come out on top.' The British team, despite missing key players such as Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, Katie Boulter, and Fran Jones, took charge with singles victories courtesy of Dart and debutant Mika Stojsavljevic on Friday. Although Katie Swan suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to former junior world No 1 Emerson Jones due to a back issue, Britain has now won its last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup. The team will proceed to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, set to take place in September, where they will compete against the other six tie winners and host nation China. Captain Keothavong expressed her joy, stating, 'We're all overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week, and the tennis played yesterday and today was fantastic.' Keothavong believes Great Britain is 'due something special' after reaching the semi-finals last year and is optimistic about their chances of winning the Billie Jean King Cup, saying, 'That's always the ultimate goal... we're not there to make up the numbers, that's for sure.'
