Carragher: Slot's Tactical Approach Was Woefully Inadequate

According to Jamie Carragher, Arne Slot's tactical decisions were 'massively wrong' in Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain, a defeat that could have been even more severe. Carragher believes that Virgil van Dijk will urge Slot not to employ a back five again after being outclassed by the French side. Liverpool's poor season continued with their 16th defeat, courtesy of goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Reds were fortunate not to have conceded more, with PSG missing several chances and having two penalty appeals turned down by VAR. Carragher expressed his concern about the significant gap in class between the two teams, which was evident as Liverpool struggled to contain PSG's attacks. Slot's decision to switch to a back five and use man-to-man marking backfired, leaving Van Dijk exposed alongside the struggling Ibrahima Konate. Carragher feels that Van Dijk, at 34, was uncomfortable in the back three and had to cover too much ground, which could have been avoided with a different tactical approach. Slot acknowledged that Liverpool were lucky to only lose 2-0 and agreed that the tie is still alive ahead of the second leg at Anfield.
