Ronnie O'Sullivan Aims for Record Eighth World Snooker Championship Title

The World Snooker Championship is set to commence, with reigning champion Zhao Xintong seeking to overcome the 'Crucible Curse' and successfully defend his title. He will face stiff competition from Ronnie O'Sullivan, who is bidding for a record-breaking eighth world title, as well as other top contenders including Judd Trump and four-time champion Mark Selby. The tournament, which has a rich history dating back to 1927, will feature 32 players competing in the first round. Notably, since the introduction of 32 players in the first round in 1982, there has never been an instance where all 16 top seeds have advanced to the second round. O'Sullivan, who will be making his 34th consecutive appearance at the iconic Crucible venue, is the last first-time champion to have reached the semi-finals, achieving this feat in 2002. Zhao, the first world champion from China, will begin his title defense on the first day, while world number one Judd Trump will start his campaign on April 21. The top 16 seeds will be randomly drawn against the 16 players who emerge from the qualifying rounds on April 16. The tournament will also feature bonuses for maximum breaks, with a prize of £40,000 for achieving this feat at the main stage and £10,000 in the qualifying rounds. An additional bonus of £147,000 is on offer for any player who achieves two maximum breaks across the Triple Crown events and the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. With 24 different champions crowned since 1977, the competition is expected to be fierce, as players vie for the coveted title and the chance to etch their names in the history books.
