15-Year-Old Szubarczyk Makes History as Youngest Winner in World Snooker Championship

At just 15 years, two months, and 25 days old, Polish sensation Michal Szubarczyk has broken the record for the youngest winner of a World Snooker Championship match, surpassing Liam Davies' 2022 record. Szubarczyk achieved this feat by defeating Hong Kong's Ng On Yee 10-7 in the first qualifying round at the English Institute of Sport. Ng, a three-time women's world snooker champion, had been on a winning streak, having claimed victories on the women's tour in February and March. Szubarczyk expressed his pride and excitement, stating, "I feel very proud... I'm very excited to play the next match, and maybe this year or next year, I can become the youngest Crucible player." He also acknowledged the pressure, saying, "I'm enjoying the pressure. It doesn't work in a bad way for me. I even like it, and I think that's good." Szubarczyk has his sights set on playing at the Crucible Theatre, a goal he has been working towards for the past six years. He credited the Polish events for providing him with the opportunity to compete at the European and World Championships. To become the youngest qualifier for the Crucible, Szubarczyk must win three more matches, which would see him break Luca Brecel's record, set in 2012. Meanwhile, six-time World Snooker Championship finalist Jimmy White was knocked out in the first qualifying round by 21-year-old Gao Yang from China. Despite establishing an early 5-1 lead, White was unable to hold on, with Gao winning the match in a thrilling final frame. This loss means White's 20-year wait to return to the Crucible continues, despite his annual attempts to qualify.
