I Am Maximus Regains Grand National Title

In a historic 2026 Randox Grand National, I Am Maximus achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first horse to regain his title since the legendary Red Rum. The race was marred by early drama, including the fall of last year's third-place finisher, Grangeclare West, and Panic Attack at the third fence. However, I Am Maximus, ridden by Paul Townend, tracked the inside path and stormed home to win the race for a second time, having also finished second the previous year. This victory marked a record fourth win in the race for owner JP McManus, who also saw his horse Iroko finish second. Trainer Willie Mullins, who joins Red Rum's trainer Ginger McCain and Fred Rimell as a four-time National-winning handler, praised I Am Maximus, saying, 'He's a superb horse who got a fantastic ride.' The victory was also notable for being the first time one owner had the first two horses home in the race. Mullins reflected on the win, saying, 'It's the race we aspire to win. It's the race you want to win and be a part of - just to have a runner is a tremendous sensation.' I Am Maximus's jockey, Paul Townend, described the horse as 'tough' and said, 'He'll gallop to the end of the world for you.' The win has sparked speculation about I Am Maximus's potential to emulate Red Rum's historic third success in the Grand National. When asked about the possibility, Mullins said, 'Hopefully he'll be here next year, JP is very keen on the National for I Am Maximus, he says he loves the place and jumps the fences so well.'
