Can India Afford to Overlook Sooryavanshi, and Will He Make His Mark on England?

At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has made history as the youngest player to score a century in the Indian Premier League, achieving this feat a mere nine days after his record-breaking debut at the age of 14 in 2025. Now, Sooryavanshi continues to impress, fueling discussions about his potential debut on the international stage. His remarkable debut season in the IPL, where he scored a 35-ball hundred at 14, has been followed by an equally impressive performance in the 2026 edition, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure with the Rajasthan Royals. Sooryavanshi has already achieved two 15-ball fifties, against the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and is the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, with 200 runs from five innings at an impressive strike rate of 263.15. Although a golden duck in the defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad reminded everyone that Sooryavanshi is human, his exceptional ball-striking power, physical presence, and composure at the crease have left seasoned professionals in awe. "We are amazed by his hitting ability; he is a great talent, and we feel fortunate to have him on our team," said Dhruv Jurel, India and Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper-batter. "When Vaibhav is smashing every ball, it makes you feel like nothing is happening on the wicket; cricket is not as easy as he makes it look." With potential international teammates like Jurel praising his skills, the question arises whether India can continue to ignore Sooryavanshi. India boasts an abundance of emerging talent, and with their T20 side recently crowned World Cup winners, it remains to be seen whether the selectors will choose to alter a winning formula. However, occasionally a player emerges who is so exceptional that they cannot be overlooked. Sooryavanshi appears to be in the same league as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. His impressive 175 in the U19 World Cup final in February, which led India to a 100-run victory over England and a record sixth title, demonstrated his ability to perform against the best. With a packed summer of white-ball fixtures ahead, Sooryavanshi has ample opportunity to make his international debut. If he is not given a debut in the upcoming series against Afghanistan, his breakthrough could come in the British Isles, where India will face Ireland and England in seven T20Is and three ODIs in June and July.
