Cyclist Faces Suspension for On-Road Altercation

The governing body of world cycling has imposed a 25-day ban on New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident in which he struck a fellow competitor during a race. Footage from the event, which took place in the Netherlands on March 7, shows Watts, 24, punching Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas in the head during the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has confirmed that Watts has accepted the penalty and will be suspended until May 2. In a statement, the UCI noted that the suspension period will include a one-day penalty already served by Watts, as imposed by his team on March 8. Watts subsequently apologized for his actions on social media, attributing them to a momentary lapse. His team, NSN Development Team, also issued an apology for the incident. The UCI's decision comes amidst a series of developments in the cycling world, including the recent knighthood of Sir Mark Cavendish and contract extensions for notable cyclists.
