Wilshere Claims First Managerial Trophy as Luton Triumphs in Vertu Trophy

Luton has secured the Vertu Trophy, with Jack Wilshere earning his first honor as a manager after defeating Stockport 3-1 in the final. The former Arsenal and England midfielder, a two-time FA Cup winner as a player, achieved this triumph in his debut season as a manager, thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and a double from Nahki Wells. Wilshere aims to revive the club's fortunes after successive relegations led to Luton's slide from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One. This victory marks Luton's 10th Wembley appearance and provides another memorable moment, comparable to their 1988 League Cup final win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final triumph against Coventry. Stockport, on the other hand, experienced disappointment at Wembley, having won only once in seven appearances and not defeating Luton in 18 matches since 1968. The team has also lost all three EFL Trophy finals, including the previous two in 1992 and 1993. A significant call was made by referee Martin Coy when he denied Luton a penalty in the second minute. Isaiah Jones was shoved in the back by Josh Stokes, and replays showed considerable contact. Stockport took the lead in the 11th minute through Adama Sidibeh, who outran defender Mads Andersen and scored with a looping shot. However, Luton equalized in the 22nd minute when Jordan Clark's pass released Lawrence, who broke clear and fired a low shot through the legs of keeper Corey Addai. Veteran striker Wells then put Luton ahead in the 39th minute, bringing down Kal Naismith's cross with a sublime touch before turning and firing past Addai. Luton might have added a third before the break, but Ben Osborn made a goal-saving tackle on Jones. In the second half, Clark went close to scoring a third for Luton, which finally came in added time when Wells latched onto Shayden Morris's cross and fired home from six yards, securing his ninth goal of the season. An emotional Wilshere expressed that winning at Wembley as a manager surpasses his experiences as a player. He praised his senior players, including Wells, for their crucial role in the success. Wilshere also expressed delight for the 35-year-old Wells, who had been an injury doubt for the game. Meanwhile, Stockport manager Dave Challinor aims to use the Wembley defeat as motivation to secure their League One play-off place, with the main goal remaining promotion.
