Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Opponent

According to Martin Brundle, George Russell should consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two drivers engage in an emerging title battle. Mercedes has dominated the season's early stages, securing victories in the first three races. However, it is Antonelli who surprisingly holds a nine-point lead over Russell. The 19-year-old Italian has benefited from fortunate circumstances, including a timely safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix that enabled him to overtake Russell and claim his second consecutive win. Russell, who was favored to win the title before the season began, now faces a more competitive battle than anticipated. Having earned a Mercedes seat in 2022 after spending three years with Williams, Russell was paired with Lewis Hamilton for three seasons before Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025. Brundle stated, 'If I were George, I would be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' He emphasized that Russell must view Antonelli as a serious challenger, similar to Hamilton in his prime, and acknowledge that the championship is not guaranteed. Antonelli has demonstrated his capabilities, rebounding from a significant crash during the season's opening weekend to produce a solid performance. While Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has downplayed Antonelli's championship chances, Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately prevail, but he has been impressed by the Italian's pace.
