Nasser Hussain Urges Ben Stokes to Reclaim His Batting Form

On the latest Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, former England captain Nasser Hussain emphasized that current Test captain Ben Stokes needs to rediscover his batting prowess. England's recent performance under head coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes has been marred by a 4-1 loss in Australia, with their sole victory coming in a remarkable two-day Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Stokes has acknowledged the past three months as the most challenging period of his captaincy but remains optimistic about the team's potential under the current leadership. However, the team has struggled to beat Australia or India in a five-match series since McCullum and Stokes took charge in 2022. Hussain, who captained England from 1999 to 2003, believes Stokes had a disappointing Ashes series but must focus on his own game and start scoring runs. Despite Stokes' poor Ashes performance, averaging just 18.40 with the bat, Hussain praises him as one of the best captains, possessing excellent gut feel, tactics, man-management, and empathy. Hussain suggests that Stokes could bring clarity and authenticity to the team, emphasizing the importance of a clear message to the team and County cricket. The former captain advises Stokes to prioritize his own game, particularly his batting, and to focus on scoring runs, as this is what players are ultimately judged on. With Stokes currently recovering from facial surgery and poised to miss the first month of the County Championship season with Durham, England is set to face New Zealand in their first Test series of the summer, starting on June 4.
