Grey Dawning Edges Out Solness in Thrilling Melling Chase

In a masterful display, Grey Dawning skillfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Solness, who was stepping up from two miles, initially took the lead, disputing it with Gidleigh Park before asserting dominance down the back straight. However, Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning, having finished a commendable fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was always poised to strike, jumping well and displaying enthusiasm. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton guided the 5-1 chance to the front, and although Solness refused to yield, Grey Dawning's stamina ultimately gave him the edge, securing a narrow neck victory. Dan Skelton explained the decision to drop back to two and a half miles, stating, 'We were doing well but not winning, so we had to change things.' He added that the cheekpieces were used as 'a little something extra' for the shorter trip. The win was a bittersweet moment for owner Robert Kirkland, who had recently lost his wife. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, 'He's a very good horse on his day.' Henry de Bromhead reflected on Heart Wood's third-place finish, suggesting the shorter distance may have been a factor. Jo Tizzard was pleased with JPR One's fourth-place finish, acknowledging that he 'comes up a bit shy in Grade Ones.'
