Smith Revives Form with Century as Surrey Forces Draw

Jamie Smith made a remarkable comeback from his struggles in the Ashes with a century, helping Surrey secure a draw in their County Championship season opener against Warwickshire. Smith, who had a disappointing winter Ashes tour with an average of 23.44 in five Tests, reminded England selectors of his prowess with 132 runs at No 3 in Surrey's second-innings score of 447-4 at Edgbaston. Despite trailing by 47 runs with three wickets down at the start of day four, following Warwickshire's massive first-innings total of 544, Smith's century and Dan Lawrence's 161 ensured the match ended in a stalemate. The pair put on 217 runs for the fourth wicket. Elsewhere in Division One, Somerset and Nottinghamshire played out a draw, as did Glamorgan and Yorkshire, while Sussex secured an opening win on the road against Leicestershire. James Rew, a rival for Smith's spot as wicketkeeper in the England Test team, scored a second-innings hundred for Somerset but only added 14 runs to his overnight 108 not out. Tom Kohler-Cadmore also achieved a century, scoring 104 runs. The hosts eventually declared on 407-5, setting Nottinghamshire a target of 417 to win. Nottinghamshire comfortably held out for a draw, reaching 140-3 in 45 overs, with opener Ben Slater top-scoring with 60. Yorkshire had a more nervous finish, holding out on the final evening of their match with Glamorgan, finishing on 239-7 from 67.4 overs after being set 295 to win. Glamorgan had earlier declared on 218-5, with Colin Ingram scoring 75 runs, before pursuing wickets. Leg-spinner Mason Crane claimed three wickets to reduce Yorkshire to 139-3, but veteran opener Adam Lyth scored a crucial 97. His wicket, three runs short of a century, gave Glamorgan renewed hope at 174-5. However, they ran out of overs, ultimately failing to secure a win. Sussex joined Essex as the only top-tier teams to register a win in the opening week, clinching a 222-run victory over Leicestershire. The hosts, resuming on 125-5, were eventually bowled out for 258, with seamer Henry Crocombe taking 4-36 to finish with match figures of 9-69. This victory wiped out Sussex's 12-point deduction from the ECB, putting them 10 points ahead. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed by an innings and 14 runs over Gloucestershire, taking their last seven wickets for 83 runs on day four. Elsewhere, England's record wicket-taker, James Anderson, missed out on victory in his first match as Lancashire's first-class captain by a single wicket. Northamptonshire looked certain to lose but their tail hung on valiantly for the draw. Anderson removed Lewis McManus and Louis Kimber to put his side within one wicket of victory, but George Bartlett's battling 95 not out saved his side. Durham ran out of time to force home their advantage over Kent, declaring on 218-9 with a lead of 356. They removed Zak Crawley for 20 but finished five wickets short of securing a win. Tawanda Muyeye hit an unbeaten 109 as Kent reached stumps on 254-5 from their 57 overs. Worcestershire also held on for a draw at Derbyshire, closing on 314-7 after being forced to follow on, with England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir claiming 1-55 from his 27 overs.
